31st Infantry Division:
The Dixie Division.

When the U.S. entered WW II, the 31st Division was allocated
to the Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi National
Guard and trained at Camp Blanding, Florida. After being
Federalized on November 25th, 1940, the Division changed
stations three times and participated in the 1941 Louisiana
maneuvers and the 1943 Carolinas maneuvers. The 31st embarked
for the Pacific Theater in March of 1944 and received
additional amphibious training in New Guinea.

The shoulder patch of the 31 st is based on a WW I design
that was approved by the AEF on March 7th, 1919. The monogram
letters "DD" (facing back to back) represent the
"Dixie Division." This was chosen as a nickname in WW I
because at that time the Division was composed of troops
from Alabama, Florida, Georgia and all states located below
the Mason-Dixon line.
