30th

30th Infantry Division:
Old Hickory Division.

When the U.S. entered WW II, the 30th Division was allocated
to the Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee
National Guard and was in training at Fort Jackson, South
Carolina. After being Federalized on September 16th, 1940,
the Division participated in the Carolina maneuvers of 1941
and the Tennessee maneuvers of 1943. The 30th was primarily
used to train, instruct, and staff other units in the early
part of the war and did not embark for overseas until February
11th, 1944, arriving in England and receiving additional training.

The design of the patch is based on the unit's nickname as
the monogram letters "0" and "H" represent "Old Hickory" and
the three Roman numerals "XXX" (30) in the center represent
the unit's number. "Old Hickory" was the affectionate name
given to President Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812,
when he was a General. Because of Jackson's indomitable
fighting qualities and commanding personality, "Old Hickory"
was chosen as the Division's nickname by the WW I Division
Commander. This nickname was especially appropriate because
(at this time) the 30th was primarily composed of men from
the two Carolinas and from Tennessee and both Carolinas claimed
Jackson who made his home in Tennessee. Letters indicate that
the patch was originally worn horizontally except that the
Division Artillery was detached when the insignia was adopted
so the Artillery Commander ordered that his men sew it on
vertically as this appeared to be the "natural way." It became
the custom of the division to wear the patch in this mixed
manner for many years until the vertical wear became standard
during WW II.
