13th Airborne Division
The 13th Division was activated on August 13th, 1943, with
Headquarters at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and was transferred
to the Airborne Center at Camp Mackall, North Carolina, in
January of 1944. The 13th embarked for the European Theater
of Operations in January of 1945 and was assigned to the
First Allied Airborne Army
The Division was inactivated on February 25th, 1946.
The shoulder patch for the 13th Airborne was approved by
the AGO on June 2nd, 1943. The unicorn is a symbol for
virtue, courage, and strength, and the wings suggests its
"Airborne" travel. The blue background is the color for
infantry and also indicates the sky which is the medium of
travel for the division. The 13th Airborne Division is
considered a different unit than the 13th Division of WW I
and does not share its history.
