Sailing a Catalina Capri 22 from Harborlight Yacht Club, Long Beach, 2 July 2007
This was our first "exploring the vicinity" sail in Long Beach, California. Our main goal was to find a replacement for Club Nautique South and SeaTime, formerly in Balboa and Lido at Newport Bay. Our online search brought us to Harborlight Yacht Club, which is located on the grounds of the Coast Long Beach Hotel, in close proximity to the dock with the Queen Mary. We took a Catalina Capri 22. Weather was superb with a mild wind of approx 10 knots. The bay was almost empty and it was nice to go slow and learn the vicinity.

Four miles of breakwater along San Pedro Bay create a protected zone with 4 drilling islands and a straight shoreline. The islands look weird, definitely unique examples of industrial architecture. To the north of the bay is the huge Port of Long Beach, the largest trade port in California. Even though it looks somewhat like Oakland, Long Beach's skyline, maritime attractions, and land marks make it a very special destination.

Special treat of the day: On the hotel grounds and on the docks we stumbled into the production of a future episode of the TV show Dexter. We were astonished about the amount of technology and material needed on such a shoot! We enjoyed the commotion and the chance to take our own pictures. The production crew was very friendly and very professional. Time permitting, they explained the "behind the scenes" activity to us.
