Florida and Georgia

From 2000 to 2004 I completed my undergraduate degrees in biology and ecology. While there, I spent a lot of time out looking for herps in Florida and Georgia. I still enjoy to visit these wonderful states from time to time, most recently in July of 2005.

Hello, I was hicking in Cartersville Georgia and came accross a small stream and there was a snake swimming in it. I can't seem to identify it and would like to know what it was. It was just about 3 feet long dark brown but it had clear diamond shapes on its back to me it looked like the diamond back rattle snake but it did not have the rattle tail. Thank you.

I am living north of Atlanta, GA. I came across a black snake with yellowish white markings. The markings were square-shaped and lined the sides of the snake toward the belly. The snake was about 2 and 1/2 feet long. I have been trying to find a picture on the internet to identify it and have been unsuccessful. I thought you might be able to help. Thank you.
