May 8-2:00 p.m.- As the Last Needle Drops the Spillway is Officially Closed

Bonnet Carre' Spillway

Not quite as dramatic as the opening on April 11 but interesting in that the Spillway served its purpose well, no one was injured and the structure was opened a minimum of days to prevent the ecology of Lake Pontchartrain from being too badly damaged.
The cranes are too dangerous to operate in wind speeds of 25mph or over. On this day the wind speed was 24 mph.
The River is still high and will continue to seep through the needles of the structure for some time.

any idea on how long the water will continue to seep thru the closed bays?? I know as long as the water level is that high on the river side.. My question I guess is.. how long will that level be that high?
