These are two of the 120 college students who came this week from all over the United States to volunteer in the hurricane recovery work. We had them working the Bird Sanctuary area at Lafreniere Park today only and they cut over one-hundred tallow, invasive trees and planted cypress and tupelo gum. They also waded in the water and picked up tons of trash. Discarded Christmas trees were brought in and they hauled tens of those tied together to make a levee to build up the soil in the wetlands area of the sanctuary. I have never seen young people work so hard, collectively, in my life. The girls outworked the boys and were in the water up to their behinds lashing the trees together.
However, these two young women not only worked very hard but their personalities just stood out from all the rest. Karen and Neal, I think they are from Connecticut and Minnesota.
Thank you so much.
