17th Street Canal at Bucktown

Bucktown

The last floodgate is lowered into place. These gates will shut off the water between Lake Pontchartrain and the 17th Street Canal when a surge is greater than 5 feet. This is the canal where the floodwalls broke during Katrina and flooded a large portion of the City, drowned many people and destroyed entire neighborhoods.
The land area where the floodgates are has been taken by the Corps of Engineers. The small fishing village that was here will no longer exist.

I have slowly scrolled down through the thumbs...it's been a while but it gives such a sense of the long haul so far...there is still such a lot more to be done.
