My mother and her cup

Metairie, Louisiana

My mother was born on February 2, 1894 and died on March 23, 1985. The picture of her was taken on her 84th birthday and I wish it would have photographed better because she was so beautiful.
I was born rather late in her life and was the last of eight children. I have savored and cherished everything I learned of her life before I came along.
The demitasse cup and saucer was one of four that she bought at an antique shop in New Orleans in 1914. She had seen them, immediately fell in love with them and saved up her money until she could get them. On that day, being the frugal person she was, she decided to save money on streetcar fare so walked the 22 blocks to the shop and then 22 blocks back to her house, all the while carrying her five month old son in her arms. Amazingly, the four cups and saucers were never chipped or broken and I inherited one of them. A softer shot of just the cup can be seen at http://www.pbase.com/image/39293526.
At the time of her death she had 25 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. Hopefully her wonderful spirit lives on in all of us.

What a beautiful story and picture Coleen. It could make a great novel, did you ever try your hand at writing professionally?

Wonderful story, Coleen. You didn't need to tell me she was a beautiful woman -- it is clear in the photo, in her eyes, her smile, and her very posture. I'm sure that had I known her, I'd say 'What a gal'.

Memories of loved ones carry such a special place in our hearts.
Having a piece of their lives in our posession serves to remind us
of them each time we look at them. Wonderful story Coleen!

Is still wish I would take more shots of different people & situations, sometimes humble snapshots of people are the ones we look back on.

A wonderful birthday memorial to your Mom. She looks quite proud and strong. And from your description she must have been quite the plucky lady. A very touching posting Coleen.

That was a lovely tribute to your mother. Excellent!

Lovely! I agree with Karen; when it is so easy to amass "stuff" we don't need at all, we lose the keen pleasure derived from small things.

It is obvious that her spirit lives on in you, Coleen. I just love the look in her eyes, and your story is wonderful. What a lady. A very loving tribute.

Delightful cup & saucer & wonderful photo of your mother. Of course the story is so typical of women of her generation. Thank you for sharing, Coleen.

Both the cup and photo of your mother are just lovely. I liked the story too. People back then did not spend a penny more than they had to. It makes you think. I'm always buying things I don't really need and those credit cards are so convenient, I'm always in debt too.
