Light the darkness

New Orleans, Louisiana

This weekend marks the 190th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans in which the British were defeated. The Ursuline nuns came to New Orleans in 1727 to open a military hospital, an orphanage and a girls' school. The Order of nuns still has a Convent and Academy in New Orleans and celebrated today with a Mass at the Convent.
In 1814 General Andrew Jackson asked the Ursulines to pray that the City would be spared in battle. The nuns prayed all night and the battle was won. A promise was made that from that day forward a Mass of thanksgiving would be held every January 8. On Saturday three archbishops of Louisiana participated in the ceremony and the "Te Deum" was sung for the 190th time in keeping with the promise. See http://www.Pbase.com/image/38450804.
Hundreds of people participated and many lit votive candles for the victims of the Tsumani and for six local Louisiana National Guardsmen who were killed in Iraq on Thursday. The candles gave a warm glow to the bleak winter weather.Another view at http://www.PBase.com/image/38438529.

This is an amazing set up. I really like the amount of candles on the bottom platform, but I think my favorite part is the metal ones with the crosses up higher. I would love to have something similar to this in my meditation room. Where did you get all of those candle holders?http://www.neicysknickknacks.com/dept-45010-pfid-10015550

Can it Stu, you can't both be a Scot and a Brit at the same time! ;-)
Coleen ... I know about the battle, but wasn't aware of these anniversary rites. Excellent of you to capture it. Good shot and it is an excellent reminder about the folks in SE Asia.
And back to Andy Jackson and his boys. I wonder if most people (here) know that the Peace Treaty had already been signed when the battle took place?

Nice... even if it does celebrate a victory against us!

A beautiful image & story, Coleen. So much sadness in the world right now.

Really effective composition. It's amazing how much light they produce. It looks like they could light up the whole city.

Great perspective and very moving photo. Especially with the commentary.

I hope you get your galleries back. Apparently, there were some problems with the discs on the servers. I'm sure (?) Pbase has back up and they will be restored when it's finally fixed.
