January 28 2019 River seeping through Spillway locks

Water from the Mississippi has been seeping through the Locks for several weeks and the Spillway is closed to traffic and all activities. With the excessive snowfall in the northern states it is possible the River will rise high enough to force the opening of the Locks to allow water to flow into Lake Pontchartrain to take the strain off the levees downstream, mostly to protect the City of New Orleans.

All that heavy snow missed us to the south, Maybe the current polar vortex will slow the melting!

So far our snow fall is down a bit but we were sure trying to catch up with this last storm. For the next few days, highs in the minus teens! Looking at the river gauge it seems a couple of feet high from when we first moved here for this time of year, good luck with the Spring thaw!

I hope things work out OK down there.
