Mr. and Mrs. Trimble of New Orleans purchased Afton Villa in 1972. It was in ruins and nothing had been done there since the grand house burned to the ground in 1963. Since the beginning of Afton Villa garden designs were in place combining the English style and the French Louisiana style and each owner added something new. Plans never strayed too far from the original design which is well documented in landscape design records of Louisiana.
The Trimbles cleared the debris over a period of four years( which consisted of hundreds of snakes in the house ruins) and began developing flower gardens amongst the ruins. Over 30,000 daffodil bulbs were planted on the hillsides by Mrs. Trimble in 1980 and she and a bulb grower from Holland began experimenting to see which tulips would grow best in the soil of the Feliciana parishes.
During the Audubon Pilgrimage week in March, thousands of magnificent tulips of gold and white, nestled among blue, yellow and white pansies can be seen in the gardens amongst the ruins. The blue wisteria and the "Pride of Afton" azaleas, along with other azaleas and the thousands of daffodils may be enjoyed from anywhere in the seven-terraced grounds.
Mr. Trimble died in 2004 and Mrs. Trimble is carrying on the work that they so loved and enjoyed together.
