A Small Part of the Cemetery at Carville

Carville, Louisiana

Each tombstone is inscribed with a fictitious name and the true date of birth and death of the person. Beneath it is a number known only to the records of the Colony. This was done to protect the families of the patients.
If people in a town knew that a member of a family had leprosy, they would burn the house down or worse so people hid their identity.
