George Edward Crews
by William Edward Crews

George Edward Crews was born April 4, 1845 in Henry County, VA to Samuel Crews and his wife Mariah Hatcher Crews, and with his parents, five brothers, and two sisters, George Edward came to Rockingham County around 1860. His parents bought a tract of land in the Beaver Island community where they lived out the remainder of their days.

On December 11, 1868 George Edward Crews maried Mary Caroline F. Hall, daughter of James Hall and his wife, Sarah Ann "Sally" Powers Hall. This young couple made their home down the road from his parents and reared a large family. Their children were Thomas W., Robert G., Ida Sue, Sally A., James H., Ada, Marvin S., Lena, and J. Banner.

Thomas W. Crews married Emma Vernon and lived in Mayodan. Robert G. married Etta Nelson and they lived in Leaksville. Ida Sue married Winston M. Carter and they lived in Leaksville. Sallie A. married James "Jim" Hutcherson. James H. went to Pennsylvania as a young man and made his home there. Ada married John Glidewell and they lived in Greensboro. Marvin S. married first, Annie Webster, and after her death, he married Clarreen Neville of Orange Co., NC. Banner married Almeda "Medie" Dalton and they both are still living (as of 1983) in Rockingham County and will soon celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary, a very special occasion. Lena died at thirteen years.

Mary Caroline F. Hall Crews died on January 21, 1894. George Edward later married Mary Cardwell of Ayersville and they had four children: Moir, who married Florence Fulcher; Thelma, who married Fred Ellington; Grace, who married Elmer Nichols; and Minnie, who married John Gallimore. Moir and Grace live in Eden (as of 1983), as did Minnie until her death, and Thelma lives in Burlington.
George Edward Crews died on October 16, 1922 and Mary Cardwell Crews died in 1931.
George Edward Crews, my grandfather for whom I was named, was a very serious-minded man, and by reading some of his old letters, we feel he was a good Christian.
