Imported to control rats in Hawaii canefields, these ferret sized creatures mutilplied abundantly.
Unfortunately, rats are nocturnal, mongoose are diurnal so their paths rarely crossed.
They were not introduced to Kauai and this explains in part the abundance of free ranging chickens on that island.
