Pu'uhonua o Honaunau was a natural place for the Hawaiian Royalty or ali'i as they were known.
This was a place of refuge for defeated warriors, noncombatants in time of war and those who violated the kapu, the sacred laws.
Your crime would be absolved by the priests and you could return home.
