The "Eddie Aikau"

The Quicksilver Eddie Akau surf event is the premier surf contest for professional surfers. Held on Oahu's North Shore only when the waves exceed 20+ feet consistently and the waves plus other conditions are just right. Eddie Aikau was the quintessential Hawaiian Surfer who gave his life for his fellow crew aboard the Hawaiian sailing vessel, Hokulea when it was damaged at sea. He set out to get help when all seemed lost but unfortunately was never heard from again.
The event has been held only a handful of times in the last 25 years. This December 2009, the waves were just right courtesy of a winter storm north of Hawaii.
