This square inaugurated in 1763 was originally called Place Louis XV.
From November 1792 until May 1795 it was renamed Place de la Revolution.
It was the principal site of public executions such as those of
Louis XVI on 21 January 1793 and Marie-Antoinette on 16 October 1793.
