The Wells Clock

Wells Cathedral

Dating from about 1390 this is considered to be the second oldest working clock in the world and the oldest with its original dials.

Telling the time

The HOUR is marked by a large gold sun pointer against the OUTER CIRCLE of Roman numerals which show the 24 hours of the day, beginning with 12 noon at the top.

The MINUTE is shown by a small star pointer against the SECOND CIRCLE.

The LUNAR MONTH. Around the THIRD CIRCLE, the pointer in the crescent moon shows the days since the new moon. The golden moon appears through the hole in the disc to reflect its shape in the night sky.

THE MOVING FIGURES

Every quarter-hour, the jousting knights gallop round the turret above the clock face. The same one has been knocked down every time for over 600 years.

Above and to the right the large figure of Jack Blandifer(see the next photo) strikes bells at every quarter with his heels and at the hour with his hammer
