The Arrival of Frederik V from the Palts and Elisabeth Stuart at Flushing in May 1613, 1623

HENDRIK CORNELISZ VROOM 1562/63—1640

The smoke of the solutes: the royal couple arriving on the
Prince Royal, flying the white flag with the English royal
standard. The ship in the centre, foreground, belongs to
the House of Orange. The princes Maurice and Frederick
Henry greet their guests. The barge carrying the royal
couple sails into Flushing. This was a highly important
event for the United Provinces: Frederick V was o symbol
of the Protestant cause Gnd the fight against Spanish
aggression and the Inquisition. This explains why the
subject was often depicted, among them Vroom's pupil
Cornelis van Wieringen and the Utrecht painter Adam
Willaerts. (Frans Hals Museum)
