Marriage A-la-Mode: 6. The Lady's Death, about 1743

William Hogarth, 1697-1764

"The countess has read the news of the execution of her lover Silvertongue
for the murder of the earl, and she has taken poison. The countess' child,
his leg wasted by hereditary disease, is brought to say farewell to his mother.
Her miserly father removes her ring. On the right, the idiot servant who brought
the poison is scolded." The National Gallery
