I am a medical practitioner in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. One of my patients is a 92 yo who is the widow of one of the brothers of Harold Gatty. She remembers clearly Harold's fame. On a recent visit she gave me an accurate account of his exploits. I had not realised the connection when I visited Washington and the Smithsonian Museums in June 2005 and saw the Winnie May. Harold's father James was the Town Clerk in Richmond Tasmania. A small dam on the Coal River at Richmond was built as a depression employment project. It was named "The Gatty Swimming Pool" in 1945, I assume on his death. At Cambelltown, Harold's birthplace, is a Memorial to the aviator.
