In our continuing attempts to figure out what to do with the patch of dirt right by our mailbox, my mom once planted ginger flowers. After a few years, she got tired of that (and frustrated with the lack of flowers) and yanked everything up in preparation for covering the entire area with red cinder. Obviously the roots of ginger grow deep, because shoots like this one are still coming up.
