Built by the Cleveland, Akron, and Columbus Railway (CA&C), became part of the Pennsylvania System, it was for a while PRR's main line from Columbus to Cleveland. Much of this line is now the Kokosing Bike Trail which begins near this depot. This was a bank for a while and a C&O wooden caboose stood next to the depot. It was moved to Gambier (next station stop east, railroad north)and rebuilt and currently sits next to the rail trail on the Kenyon College campus. The B&O also went through Mt. Vernon and they too built a beautiful depot as well and is preserved today. Note the B&O railroad bridge between the trees on the right of the picture (look real close). The Ohio Central currently uses the line from Newark, south of Mt. Vernon.
