A CRYING SHAME

This is a classic Lotus Elan +2S, one of the very first batch from the 1960s. I first knew it when it's current owner bought it in the late 1970s, for a year or so it was his pride and joy. However it was, as lotus' often are, a bit fickle and often needed tuning. One sad day it needed a bit of work doing and it got left in the owners front garden, waiting ... and waiting. The local kids soon realised that the low nose made it great for BMXing, riding their bikes up the front, over the top and down the back. This started the stress cracks, which now cover the plastic bodywork. The work needed to fix it was now greater, still it waited .... and waited ....and waited. Over the years the car was moved round the back of the house, a rickety lean-to was built to keep out the worst of the weather, still the car waited ....and waited.

Many enthusiasts have trekked to its owners door, wanting to buy it and restore it to glory. Each time the owner has turned down their generous offers, saying that he will restore it, one day ....one day. True, a couple of years ago, he did turn up with a new windscreen for it, and a new drivers seat. The cars little rusted heart leapt, surely now it was going to have the attention it deserved lavished upon it. Sadly not, since that day it has just sat there, waiting.... and waiting.

The weather today has been damp, depressing and miserable. This put me in the mood for doing a depressing and miserable shot. As a car enthusiast, seeing a once great thoroughbred as this left to rot like this is as depressing a sight as it gets.

Please feel free to comment, they are always welcome.

What a sad story. I am a car guy too so I feel your pain. A buddy of mine has a '69 Camaro SS behind his house that isn't in this bad of shape yet but it's getting there. I wish he would sell it to me but I don't think my wife would go for that ;-)

Shame Indeed. Perhaps it would like to tow my equally decrepit PaD caravan?

Smack your neighbor on the back of the head for me.
What a sad sight.

It sure was beautiful when I first saw it arrive in my neighbours drive, all those years ago. I fell in love with it then and it broke my heart to see it abandoned over the years. I've tried to get him to sell it to someone who will lavish some TLC on it, but sadly it still sits there. I can understand our American friends not recognising it, I don't think many reached their shores.

Oops, my bad, I wrote my comment before Graham had written his story. Indeed it is a sad sight. I bet it would be beautiful if restored....

The Elan +2 was one of my favorite cars as a kid... nearly bought one a few years ago, but got into Beetles instead... Shame to see this one in such a state. (What's all this Porsche nonsense?)

Ahh what a wonderful car, built long before my day but you have to love them, i worked for a few years restoring Ferrari's and other prestige cars, you will be amazed at the state some arrived in, pleasure to see the leave though.
