I find it is much easier to see exactly what I am doing if I turn the "eye" off on the BACKGROUND layer below. This has the effect of showing just the transparent grid in the areas that I have painted on the mask. If the "eye" of the BACKGROUND layer is ON, it is much harder to tell exactly what has and has not been masked.
