A Decade Of Digital

Sometime in mid 1999, I caved in to the technology and bought my first digital camera,
the Olympus C-3000 Zoom. Most recently, near the end of 2009, I bought my latest, the
Olympus E-P1.

In the upcoming weeks, and months, I will take a personal look back on ten years
of digital photography. I will look back on the technology, cameras, lenses, and the
various models I have used. I hope to share with you some of my personal favorite shots,
some which you might have seen, and some which have never been posted before. And I
will take a look back at how digital has changed my life, and how it changed photography
itself.

Note: This one is for my dear friend, indeed one of my very first friends
here on Pbase, someone who I haven't seen around here in a while. She is an
outstanding photographer, a master at using light and shadows to create unique and
moody images...An inspirational photographer, and a really nice person, the
One and Only Ana Carloto.

Yes, time changes and changes fast and it's so nice to choose - one choice does not eliminate the other. I guess the most important is the ability to see, doesn't matter if film or digital. :)
Excellent collection, my friend, and wonderful dedication to Ana - she really deserves our best.

My first dive into the pixel pool was with the Olympus C-3000z. It was love at first delayed shutter click. I think that baby cost me $500 plus $75 for a 60mb card. The 3000z now lives in the glove box of my truck, the just in case I need it camera.
:O)

man...those early digital cameras were expensive and the megapixels were small..and so were the memory cards...I remember my first memory card which I had to pay extra for...16mb...whoa! Then my first camera, Nikon Coolshot, cost me over $700. used it once, dropped it and never used again. We've come a long way baby!

Excellent presentation. Love the arrangement and lighting. v

Great choice and combination that I was going to get. However, I think I will just settle with the GF1 with 20mm. Hope to learn more insights and see a lot of inspiring images from you.

Thank you Liz, I guess we got good tastes, lol! Actually, at that time 3mp was "it" and they told us it was "good enough." I loved that little camera actually! I'm going to try to fire her up again. And yes, it has been an amazingly fast 10 years...wow.

How funny, Sam. The Oly C-3000 was my very first digital camera, too. So we must have gone digital about the same time. I really look forward to seeing this gallery grow. It's been a fast 10 years, hasn't it?

Thanks guys. Actually, I have to agree with Eckhart! I've had a couple hard drive failures in the past few years. On one, as Eckhart said a "so-called high quality" brand, I lost everything as I only relied on that hard drive. Hard lesson to swallow!!

At a superficial look, they don't look so different, but the results supposedly are worlds apart.
Besides the camera technology, what I am most concerned about is how to archivate digital files. I just scanned some slides from 1986, absolutely no problem, the state of the film is perfect, even though I did not keep it under perfect conditions. I wonder whether it wil be possible to view the digital files in 25 years from now without problem. In the past couple of years two of my hard disc drives stopped working, one of them after just one week (both were so-called high quality brands) and I also already had CD-ROM and DVD-ROM which were not readable anymore. I store my digital files both on hard disc and DVD-ROM, but aside from being quite a cumbersome procedure, it can not be called reliable at all....
