In the late nineteenth century, Lafayette Square was a prosperous residential area very near downtown St Louis, but by the late 1970s it had deteriorated into decrepit flophouses and empty shells. Adventurous urban pioneers began buying and renovating those old shells and today the Square is again a vibrant and interesting neighborhood.
