Northern Saw-Whet Owl (Aegolius acadicus)

Stony Swamp (South), Ottawa, 23rd Oct 2012.

An interesting story - this older gent, comes up to me and asked me if I can identify this woodpecker that he has just seen. On his digital camera, he shows me this bird! When I asked him politely if he could please show me where he had seen it. He says no! He then goes on to explain that it was 15 minutes down the path, on the right and about 12 feet up'. Initially I couldn't find it. However, on the way back I could hear that the chickadees had found it, along with another birder, no more than 10 feet from where the guy had originally shown me his photo! I probably wouldn't have seen it if he hadn't spoken to me.

An interesting thing happened to me today Richard. I got this email from an old neighbour of ours in which he forwarded a picture of the same Saw Whet in the same tree as the one above. He mentioned that he had found the Owl on a trail off Moodie some weeks back. He also related that he found it because two other people had been looking at it and that he had asked a photographer (you) whom he met later down the trail what bird it was. In addition he said, when asked where he had seen it, he couldn't remember exactly where but told the photographer that it was a ways back down the trail.

Cheers

Hank
