White Bay was originally a granary loading area but is now used as an overflow terminal for large cruise ships that can fit under the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
The suburb in the foreground is Pyrmont and has been extensively redeveloped to allow high rise residential towers that are close to Sydney's CBD
The other side of the cruise ship is Balmain, another gentrified suburb but has not been extensively developed and still maintains large remnants of terrace housing in the English style. These are mainly refurbished or "done up" to reflect the wealthier owners in this area.
