Many visiting the Big Island will see Waipio Valley from above, at the overlook located at the end of the paved Waipio Road. However, after hiking down a very steep road, this black lava beach can be reached, and during the rainy season, can give the hiker a spectacular view of the Kaluahine Falls. I have hiked down the valley numerous times over the last 20 years, but have witnessed this spectacular waterfall only once!
