August 1: Getting Snippy

Rancho Bernardo, CA

Nothing enrages me more than my attempts to open packages encased in hard plastic.

I’m continuing to rotate lenses each day as promised. Today’s lens is the only one restricted to the 20D. The EFS series 18-55 is a kit lens that came with the camera.

Below is my AF contribution to the world.

Canon EOS 20D ,Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
1/160s f/3.5 at 18.0mm iso400 full exif

other sizes: small medium large original auto

I use big tinsnips to open such packages. Also use them on big bags of dog food because the pull strings never work. I'm curious to know how long it takes you to fill a 4Gb card.

Excellent capture. I'm with you: Who came up with those packages?

Robin - Thought I'd jump in here & try to catch up with the comments - I'm way behind.
Certainly share everyone's frustration, especially noearlybird. What ever happened to simple cardboard packaging?
Remember when you'd go in to a store & buy a roll of film & a pack of flashcubes?

Nice card,I would recommend that the packaging designers have to open at least 20 of their designs before releasing it to production.

In your honor I'm spending the entire week using a 16mb card.

If it was good enough for the photographers of the past...
...it's good enough for me!

I HATE those packages, I feel your pain :^O

I think noearlybird has the comment of the year. Yes, I agree completely. I can't tell you how many chafed knuckles I've gotten from these things

I hate these packages too, but the absolute worst are Barbie/Bratz/PowerRanger/whatever dolls that are held bondage under the plastic that you first have to cut with scissors and then unwind twisty-tie after twisty-tie and undo sewed fishing line through the thing's hair and remove plastic tabs and keep your cursing down low so the kids don't hear! LOL here. I got a 4gb card last week and still smile a bit when I look at the counter on the camera, simple things are fun. Kathie

I don't like those packages either!

I have found that ye olde exacto knife works wonders

Vicious packaging. I always cut my hand on it.
Cindy Flood02-Aug-2006 01:12
I know that a lunatic invented this packaging.
Guest 02-Aug-2006 00:12
Ah, that packages, makes me desperate, so that scissors are the best help for this.
Great CF card!!!
Bob B.01-Aug-2006 23:14
And don't rush or force it. I got a nasty cut once in my impatience.
markvm01-Aug-2006 23:08
Yes, they are on my top ten pet peeves list. Congrats on the new CF card, Robin.

There is a course you can take to learn to open these packages with you bare hands.
It it call Chinese Kung Fu.
I understand it takes about 11 years to advance to the stage required here.
Ron S. Bernardo01-Aug-2006 22:01
Yup, they are a pain indeed ;o) I have six 512 MB and two 1 GB, I just feel comportable not to put all my shots in one card. In case something bad happens.
Gary Blanchette01-Aug-2006 21:35
You took the right approach. The bigger the scissors, the better. I wonder what the speed difference is between the standard SanDisk and the SanDisk Ultra or Extreme? I use the Ultra II, but wondered if I would actually even notice a difference?
Zak01-Aug-2006 21:19
yep, the OTT packaging is a pain
Coleen Perilloux Landry01-Aug-2006 21:13
It took me 10 minutes to open a battery pack this morning. Looks like this lens is a sharp one.
Deborah Lewis01-Aug-2006 21:11
I’m really jealous – I only have a 2GB - I feel your pain but there is one thing worst – Toddlers toys with the hard plastic wrapping and when you finally get thru that, you have to tackle the wires that are intertwined through the toys! BTW Great Capture - GMV

Nothing makes me more postal!!!!! Love your contribution to the world :)
Gordon W01-Aug-2006 21:00
I share your angst over getting into this kind of package.
Would love to have one of what's in the package though. That one CF has more capacity than all three of mine combined. ;-(
Guest 01-Aug-2006 20:53
They are a real pain, I bought 5 before I went on Hols:-)
Lee Rudd01-Aug-2006 20:38
I'm with you on the getting enraged.... many a cut has been caused by these!
