February 9: Two

Rancho Bernardo, CA

My next self-challenge (gulp) is for the next seven days to capture an image that has two subjects (two fairly equal points of interest). This feels much more difficult than the earlier challenge, yet I’m looking forward to see how it goes.

This is part of the chess set my father (J. Juan Reid) used back in the late 60’s when he was able to obtain a draw (tie) with then world champion Bobby Fisher. Of course the fact that Fisher was playing about 40 other people simultaneously in the room may have helped! ;-)

The other little wrinkle here is that I used my plasma TV screen as the backdrop.

Well done, as usual.

Using the 5D I was surprised at the noise level in the blue background until I read about it being your TV.
I like the highlites on the black piece.

One last thing... I am looking at this photo and trying to figure out what you were doing in the space below the yellow knight. Is it framing of some sort? I can't quite make sense of it.

As for the draw with Bobby Fisher... I agree that that's something to write home about no matter how many opponents were there to distract fisher.

Geez, what a challenge you've set up for yourself. For me there is always a lot of tension when I view a photo with two subjects so it will be interesting to see what you come up with. I love the crisp clarity of this one and the plasma backdrop is a stroke of genius.

I've been meaning to tell you... I think you need to add another year to your copyright notice.

Nice concept and good job.

Great contrast!!!
And fantastic background!!!
I guess I´m not able to get such a background, but I could start with one a little bit more simple ;-)

What a great yin-yang feel to this image. The images are in contrast but perfectly balanced. Wonderful image.

Excellent challenge and execution! Love the look in the eye of the black knight! Superb background!

lol at the puns coming your way :)
I like the gradiant bg. These are knights? I thought they were horses.

Very nice!

The irony of your PAD to me. I created these in 3DS Max today at school.

Is this your way of saying your "good knights" to us?
Cliff09-Feb-2006 21:18
Two knights the knight !
Glad you could get this challenge off your chess.

A very interesting image and even more so when matched with your Dad's story.

Wonderful shot of these historical pieces. Your background is very nice. The eyes on these figures are great.

Very nice colouring, Robin. Well done on these challenges.

Nice capture, though it would be nice to see a dark shiny chess board fading into the background.

This should be an interesting challenge and I look forward to seeing what you come up with. I agree with the idea of moving these two subjects somewhat closer together. And Bobby Fisher? Wow. I thought I'd done something amazing when I got a draw with a junior champion from Germany who'd moved to our school. (He probably let me do it.)

Nicely done, Robin. And a great bit of history to boot. As a chess player myself, I am a bit in awe of the fact that your father got to play Fischer and the draw is amazing.

Now that's something to proud of. Great shot and idea, I especially like the look in the eye of the black piece.

Nice shot!

Nicely done, Robin. That background is quite effective!
Herb 09-Feb-2006 16:23
I knew there was a good reason to get a new plasma tv :)

Very nicely done!

Excellent challenge and result! Thanks for sharing the history of this game in your family! You must be so proud of your dad performance!

A tie with Bobby Fisher! Doesn't matter how many others. Like the two challenge.

For composition, I would put the two just a skoosh closer. Be that as it may, ( de gustabus non disputandum est) the two pieces each have intriguing detail.

Very nice image, even on my low-powered laptop LCD.
Wow! A draw with Bobby Fisher.
I don't care how many people he was playing, that constitutes 'bragging rights'.
