Feb. 2d: Pelican Convention

Rancho Bernardo, CA

I shot this one yesterday afternoon because I am off to see the Reagan Presidential library with some friends today. These birds are being put out to sea as I begin to take nick-knacks out of my soon to be removed wall unit.

My self challenge continues: For a period of seven days to take only one picture, and regardless of how bad or good it is, I will post the original (see below) and my edited version.

I do reserve the right to use normal PS techniques to improve the original if I need to do so. This one was cropped, used levels, and sharpened.

The green background was removed and replaced with a neutral color. And now after reading Utsav Arora's comment on yesterday's image, pehaps some will question that act.

I’m fine with the result except if I had it to do over I’d face the smaller pelicans more to one side to better show their shapes. However, I did achieve a good focus and DOF on all of them. I resisted the temptation to put a ocean scene in the background…staying true to my trend to stop “adding” things.

Its very nice but of course you "added" a background that wasn't there so I am not sure it qualifies under your rules. None the less I am a huge pelican fan so this one makes me happy. I have a little tip for you that you probably already know but just in case I will share it anyway... when putting in a new background, some gradient form usually looks a bit more natural than a solid color. Your background here looks like it might be a gradient but I got the same reading no matter where I clicked so maybe not.

Those are beautiful pelicans! Lovely light!

Hey, I went back, once I had a couple of hours at home, and read your process again. I admire your restraint and self-challenge. It would be a good learning experience to keep to one and really work hard at the composition and lighting. I'll have fun watching your progress.

I envy those pelicans. They're gorgeous.

This will be an interesting challenge to watch.
I'm using too much battery power... but I'll check back as I can.

Well, in spite of your self imposed limitations...you managed to post an awesome shot. Good job, babe!

I'm glad you didn't add an ocean scene. This is a beautiful collection and it deserves to stand alone. A wider table would have helped the large pelican to look more stable.
