February 1st: One Shot

Rancho Bernardo, CA

Okay boys and girls, my self-challenge for the next seven days is to take only one picture each day, and regardless of how bad or good it is, I will post the original (see below) and my edited version. (NO MULLIGANS)

I do reserve the right to use normal PS techniques to improve the original if I need to do so. This one was cropped, used levels, added a bit of contraSt, and sharpened. There was no saturation boost.

GULP!

Canon EOS 5D ,Sigma 50mm f/2.8 EX Macro
1/8s f/11.0 at 50.0mm iso400 full exif

other sizes: small medium large original auto

I don't know why I never saw this before - but I had to comment. It's gorgeous.

And a nice shot it is.

This is real, Robin. Nice shot. Good luck on your challenge.

I like the photo but I do think that Liza expressed so well what I believe. If your goal right now is to improve composition or to improve your lighting techniques or to force yourself to get the most possible out of your camera before later post-processing, then it's a good exercise. I do believe, though, that there is an artistry beyond just the shooting that brings out the best possible of a photo.

If we were still in the "Film days" you would be saving a ton of money!
Nice challenge for yourself. Your memory card will get a much needed break :-)
I like the results of your image.

awesome shot RR!..lovely color and focal point!.. Agree with Snooty Dog... Most people and Tech Writers are not aware of the differnce between "manipulation" and " editing processing" ... What was done by the Lab Technician by 'correct exposure and over under processing was part of a good Labs high professional charges.( we would not pay the lab if he did not get out a good print!) This is today done by sharpening as well as color and brightness settings in software.. I always say in my articles-the camera is only half the tool... the other half is good software processing... Cloning in new elements or cloning out elements is Manipulation Finally, Last Week the Scientific Journal 'Nature' has given submission Guidelines... Any addition or subtraction of an external element into a part of the image that will change the original is not allowed as it is edited manipulation. Any change to an image that will change the full image and not just part is 'OK'..i.e is color corection, level etc is fine

So Go Ahead Robin.. you are on Safe grounds !!
Cheers:)

Okay, for starters your photo is very lovely. I've always been a fan of this sort of macro photography and you did a very nice job here. That said, I have to admit to being a bit stumped by your challenge. Photos from DSLRs are meant to be post processed. They deliberately leave the sharpening and contrast and color etc to the photographer rather than having those things taken care of in camera as they are with the lower end digitals. Good post processing was key to film photography and it is key to digital. Saying you are "allowing yourself" to sharpen if need be implies to me that the goal might actually be to not feel you have to. Maybe I am misunderstanding your intention with that statement though. It just seems to me that to even think about shooting a DSLR shot without post processing is akin to trying to cook a gourment meal without using any spices. Sure, it CAN be done but why would anyone aspire to that?

Now then, feel free to let me know that I completely misunderstood why your mentioned the post processing.

I don't even like the goal of one photo a day because what if you get an incredible photo op? Or have you entered a 12 step program for addicted photographers and your sponsor wants you to try moderation?

Excellent I like the colour as is...this plant needs no boost as it's fantastic as is.
I like the satin sheen in the top right of the petal & the way the lamp has picked up the ridging of the bottom petals...all round great shot.
Day one gets my vote !

Well I think you got such great textures here, wich I belive, could be better, eventhought this have captured the texture good.

I think you could used a reflector at your right side to fill a little bit and take out the little shadow on the flower.

Great shoot!!

Great botanical shot as well. However, it appears you are going to a lot of trouble for that one shot--lights, camera, tripod.......action.
BAS Photography01-Feb-2006 21:47
