November17: Lens Report

San Diego, CA

After taking well over 700 images the past few days at this confernece with the new Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, I can report that it is an excellent and versatile tool. I like its weight, it was easy to get sharp images, and it worked quite well in a large, dark ballroom. The orange-colored walls in the meeting rooms drove me crazy re color balance, but that was not a lens problem.

I used to have Canon’s Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. This new lens is fine replacement and upgrade. It will be my major “walk around” lens

Robin, very nice pictures. I can say that this lens is excellent glass as well. I have a test shothttp://www.pbase.com/ahuse/image/72218985 from this lens and let me say it is very sharp. A few of my freinds have hounded me for not getting the 24-70, but I mean, who cares? It's lighter, sharper (according to MTF charts) and I love the extra reach.

A couple interesting trade offs in the lens selection-- larger f/ at a little wider end, and a smaller f/ at a little shorter tele. Tell us more about it, please.

Your candids at the conference were excellent! That lens must be your new best friend. ;-)

Well, my walkaround is the poor man's 28-105, and I like it a lot...

Even though I have a Nikon, this is a very nice photo of the Canon lens.

I hope they paid you for this ad. LOL at myself and my bad eyes==from the thumb I thought it was a tire in the snow.

errr. I hope that is a dusty mirror, otherwise a heavy session with lens cleaner is needed
