October 30: Thoughts on Consistency

Rancho Bernardo, CA

The essence of Picture A Day, in my humble opinion, requires that serious participants come up with a new image daily. I observe this “rule” but as a second year “veteran” sometimes post something taken the day before. To me the goal is to improve photographic (and PS skills) by practicing daily.

However, as I observed earlier week this can result in my posting***crap.*** An example would be today. The earlier image alerting users to the change the time on their cameras was a public service, however it was NOT a photograph. Then later I posted an artsy-fartsy picture trying to capitalize on a ***mistake I made. ***

So when you come to my site you get some good, some bad, some so-so and usually a touch of humor. But what you do get, for certain, is an image that is fresh out of the “can” and posted daily. I only missed once when it turned out Old Faithful Lodge had no available telephone lines.

I want to support those of you who don’t follow these guidelines. Mine are self imposed. The P.E.S.O. crowd has carved out a great way to keep in the game without being overwhelmed by it. Some of my Pbase friends who I much admired have disappeared totally for a variety of reasons. I miss Bruce Berrien, Penny Roots, and Russ P. who were great. Others like Gary, Danny, and John are hanging in there PESOing away as time and spirit permits.

The vast majority of you resolutely show up day in and day out with your efforts. Not a day goes by that I am not astounded and pleased by what I see in the PaD galleries. You teach and inspire me. So even though I put up junk sometimes, I do feel connected to you all, and your comments and support touch me daily. Thank you for being there and for being my pals.

Ohh, that's a touchy commentary of yours Robin... *big smiles*
Your work is an inspiration and some of your funny pictures really makes me smiles or sometimes laugh. But your real photo shots are really impressive. :)

Great picture, Robin -- why, it looks like it's on stage!

I used to be a strict constructionist about PaD, trying to perform the way the original framers of the idea would have wanted, but then I realized -- do I need to get my undies in a twist over this? Nope! PaD is to be enjoyed, in whatever manner works for the poster. I just like takin' pitchers and lookin' at pitchers. As others have said, your work is frequently astonishing both behind the camera and in PS. It's always fun to come see what you've done each day. But I won't hold it against you if you took it another day.

Life's way too short to get one's knickers in a knot over a PHOTOGRAPH, for pete's sake!

I do enjoy PaD, it is a bit of a mental challenge.
In year 2 the pressure is off, but so far I have not relaxed.
I am having to much fun.

I consider myself a PBase vetern, having completed 365 consecutive photos taken one each day for a year.
I had some spactacular shots and some what you call"crap" shots but I made my year.
Now I post something almost every day but in the days that I just shoot "crap" I post a shot I like from my archives. Most days I get more than one good shot so sometimes I go back exactly one year and post a shot. I have enjoyed your work and your comments.
I've tried to make my PaD a kind of diary with my comments.
Great work, Robin.

Nice commentary, Robin. If nothing else gets done in the day, I make sure I get that photo come hell or high water or no supper on the table.

You know I never look at the date the photos are taken. I'm happy to look at the quality & effort I see on PADS every day. If it was taken last week then no less effort went into it in my opinion.

its such a love/hate relationship for me

I have to agree with you. For me, pad began as a learning process, then it became a "must do a pad for sake of oding a pad" and now after a couple months of struggling, I've tried to learn something new again through pad. Sometimes, its just such a chore to do it, just the feeling I dont want to associate pad with, but when I got something new out of it, im just so happy that I am sticking with pad!

PS. I miss Penny's photos as well, she really had a good touch with animals.

I would love to have the time to go out and take pictures every day!

Interesting commentary Robin. I find myself short of time these days, and can't always take a new pic. I've thought about the take one a day 'rule', which I followed pretty faithfully in Y1P and have often thought I was cheating this year with more commitments--many of them photographic in nature and subsituting one from the achives. Maybe it is time to go the PESO route.....

It's a heck of a lot of fun and often provides the motivation to see what I can come up with - either with a fresh image or maybe just editing an old one. I always enjoy your photos Robin, and whether they are masterpieces or not, you photograph with your heart and your gentle humour invariably shines through!

FOr the VERY reason you mention, about posting crap...I stopped the Photo a day.

I just want to improve, and I found myself struggling to have an image to post EVERYday and NOT focusing on improving and GETTING the job done. I mean following through, making prints, working those things out? Marketing myself?

Now I post when I feel like it, or if I want to show some portaits to the moms, or some strange Batman thing to the actors...but I think letting GO of the photo a day has helped me now. If that makes sense?

Cheers to you though, you have been a great supporter to me for all this time, EVEN commenting when I'm NOT linked to the meta LOL!!!

This is a great post. You are an inspiration too many. I can say for sure, you are an inspiration to me. Maybe one day I will earn one of these cups. But right now, I am still missing too many days. I have become very good at regularly putting up so-so images. But even so, your comments have been supportive and encouraging. I very much appreciate what you do on this site.

You deserve an award. You make this Pbase sight a brighter spot with your talent and humor. Some days I am astounded at the amount of work that you put into your PAD. I'm thinking particularly of some of your SPs where multiple Robins are exposed and put into one great photo. I know how much time and PS work it takes.
