August 9b: Retirement?

Lake George, CO

Many people have asked me about my retirement plans. I arrived in San Diego 31 years ago yesterday (the day Dick Nixon retired from the Presidency ;-), and I've been working as a consultant there since then.

This two month sojourn in Colorado has been an opportunity for reflection. Should I move here? Should I retire? Should I remain in San Diego?
For openers, I am not planning on retiring. I can afford to work only a couple days a month as a consultant and I like keeping "my hand in."

Move? Right now I'd say not. I don't need to decide this summer, and I'll probably take a couple of years to decide. No rush. There is a lot of action in San Diego.

To each his own---if you like what you're doing, keep doing it! The work I was doing had lost its appeal, so when I could retire (early), I did it. Some people think of retirement as somewhat nebulous, but I say that it's groovy!

Great Shot, and retired or not....Just have fun!

This is such a great shot. What a find!

Nice concept - if you're enjoying what you are doing as a consultant I'd say stick with it parttime...

I'm sure you have plenty of tread left in your tyres.

Retirement boils down to...if you can't find a reason why you should, then don't ! Do you pay enviro/disposal tax of $9 per tyre ( we spell it ) as we do here every time you remove them for a new set.

One day we'll all have to face the same question, eh? You're fortunate to have the options that you have. But I think one of your tires needs retreading.

Retirement to me is leaving one job and going to another that hopefully you like. I talk about it but still have not set a date. Mabey it is in the clouds of this shot.?

dont retire, your brain will explode with the lack of excitment you get only by working! ;-)

Heh. Tires as landscape. Excedllent clouds

A couple days ago a friend asked me "do artists retire?" He meant it as a comment on the value of self-expression. That is, if someone feels self-expressed, he/she doesn't think about stopping doing what he/she is doing, and offered up that people who retire from work might do so because they no longer see it as an opportunity for self-expression. Your commentary reminded me of what he said, Robin, because I can't imagine you EVER retiring. You seem so connected to and fulfilled by your consulting. I really admire you for that.

Leaving paradise? You have to be kidding!

Shucks. Guess that means you won't be giving me your house in RB, huh. Sigh.

Neat shot! Great idea!

Great reflection and is good for you to have the time to do whatever you want, even to work!!

Thanks for sharing Robin. I think this picture and especially your words have everyone reflecting on what our own futures will be. Sounds like you have come to the right decision. Time on the road usually gives a guy time to simplify the old thought process.

I want to retire so I can do more photography. Perhaps next June for me. BTW, I like this shot. I would crop out the blue sky and then I think it is quite dramatic with the tires or re-tires against the clouds. It was a great lead in to the retirement topic. Sorry for the crop suggestion.--Rene

Sounds like a well rounded decision.

I thought those were the tires you used up recently. No, don't retire. I never will. I work harder now than when I was at a full time 24/7 job. Some of us are not meant to retire.

Well Robin, I'm saddened...was hoping you'd stay and we could go to the butterfly pavillion every week...LOL. I've grown quite fond of you...so I guess I'll just have to pack up the whole fam damily and come see you in California (know you're looking forward to that...NOT!)! And, I must say...you are not as bald as some of these old tires.

transporting tires on airplane wings? New disposal tactic? Retire? Tires! Oh, I get it. When you are as far away from retirement as I am it's hard to conceive.
