June 21: Day Two – By the Time I Got to Phoenix I Was Crying

My apologies to Jimmy Webb for changing his lyrics, however it was 118 F in Phoenix when I arrived after a scenically challenged drive across southern Arizona from Yuma.

The good news is I had an excellent visit with my client in Tempe. I’m at the stage of life where I don’t really want or need much work, so of course they had several things they want me to do, and I booked 6 – 8 days for the summer and early fall.

Because of the extreme heat and very low humidity, a stubborn forest fire north of Phoenix forced the closure of I – 17 to Sedona and Flagstaff. This meant that I had to take an alternate route via Payson which turned out to be pure serendipity.

Leaving the saguaro cactus region AZ 87 climbed to over 7400 feet as it crossed the Mogollon Rim bringing cool 74 F degree breezes, the scent of pine, and mountain vistas. The route through national forest and Indian lands was pristine and untarnished by any commercial signs and buildings. The area feels quite remote, and it would be quite dangerous to get caught out in the country side without the right equipment.

It was a wonderful drive …. I became one with the road, the car, the scenery, and the music. My CD’s of Barbara Streisand and Judy Collins resonated deeply in my soul as the car glided to the northeast to Winslow.

Now I’m spending the night in Winslow, AZ which is situated on the famous old Route 66.

Sounds like a fantastic journey, Robin. Call me if you ever need a chauffeur! Wouldn't that impress your clients, having a driver with a Scottish accent!!!

I really like your description.....one with the road, the car, etc. I love this part of the country, and now our high 90's doesn't seem so bad!

Travels are always an excellent chance for taking great memories and reflexions, writting with light ( I mean photo"graphy") or writting with ink.
And travelling with Barbra Streisand must be cool!!

And to think Martin Milner & George Maharis did it with the top down & not one bead of perspiration LOL !!
See, I knew Phoenix was the hottest town in the States !!
Like your choice of music, Robin & your signboard.

They say ... um ... they say ... uh ... well, dammit, they say SOMETHING about detours and journeys and all that but I can't remember what they say. I'll bet it was profound though. Wish I could remember what they say. Tell you what -- lemme get back to you on that.

There was a heat wave in the Pheonix area the last time I passed through and the asphalt was so hot that my dog couldn't walk on it. The living conditions can be harsh, but no one can deny the tranquility of the desert.

118 - I am sweating at my desk just thinking about it! I am off to Burbank today, anything in the 80's I melt! So not use to the sun anymore after living in SF for 5 years...

LOL at the title--made my morning. And, then, Winslow, Arizona....that's another song I like. Nice clouds here. Wear lots of moisturizer or you'll end up like a prune.
Guest 22-Jun-2005 14:31
Well at least you have pleasant scenery, hope your AC is working. I like the clouds here, they add some drama to the signs.

Wow, 118? I'd of melted. I'm glad your detour turned out to be a pleasant one. Drive safe.
