Jan 2: Should I get a dog?

Rancho Bernardo, CA



Later in the Spring I’m thinking about getting a dog as a pet. I think I’d enjoy the companionship, and I know I could adjust to the responsibility.

Some wags suggest that maybe I should just get a Chia Pet! LOL. What kind do you suggest?

I have very mixed feelings about your question, Robin. As you know, having met the late and great Donovan, the companionship of a pet is a wonderful comfort and blessing that I would wish for anyone. There is also the reality of daily attention to needs, somewhat restricted freedom of movement, and, most of all, being prepared for the heartbreak of saying goodbye sometime. Tough choice. We should talk.

This dog looks cute and friendly, sharply photographed, too. But I'm not into animals as pets, myself. Dogs smell. You've got to pick up their poop, at least I hope you do, because it's nasty to think of kids playing and running along the sidewalk and soming up with a face-full of dog poop. You've got to get a sitter when you go out of town and you've got to walk them at least twice a day. You've got to be concerned about getting home "in time" so Fido doesn't mess in the house and then feel he feels real bad about it but you know it was you're fault for spending too much time at Gary's and getting caught in traffic on the way home....Dissuaded yet?

phew, took me 2 min to open the comment window. Go for it, Dogs are Great! If my Monster Dog http://www.pbase.com/phschallenger/image/37839726 Can survive Vasoline,Chocolate,Birdseed,Chapstick,Pen,CD's,Wrapping Paper, Fruitcake, and Palm Pilot, Im sure that one can pull a few lenses around!

Be prepared to give your life and love over to the dog-it will be impossible not to, and it will be repaid 10 fold. I'm almost ready to break down after a year. The only reason I haven't was that her loss was almost too much to bare.

A chia pet??? I wonder who would say that to you. No doubt someone like Russ! This is a beautiful photograph of a great looking dog Robin. How about if you got yourself an african teacup poodle and then you came to visit me here and I stole it from you? That might work, no?

Have you owned a dog before?It will change your life in a positive way in my experience.
Take your time before you decide.
My first thought was a Rottweiller,http://www.usrconline.org/
they are strong enough to carry all your lenses and still pull you uphill at a very high speed....LOL

I have been a dog owner all my life. Boxer’s, Dalmatian’s, Boston Terrier’s, French Poodle’s, Chocolate Lab’s, etc.
For a large dog, I will suggested a Golden Retriever or a Lab. They are very easy to train and they devote their lives to please their owners. They do need exercise and this will help you too. You will have to walk them every day!
For a small dog, we are just in love with my daughter’s Yorkshire terrier. Thy are usually very noisy but not TIVO. My daughter did an excellent job training him.
Whatever dog you choose “DON’T BUY THE DOG FROM A PET STORE”.

A dog is a good idea. He gives you companionship and a reason to get moving in the morning. I know we're getting a lot more exercise since Go Home didn't.

One more comment - it pays to carefully research different breeds to ensure that the dog you get has the right size, personality, and energy level for you and your particular circumstances. Also, NEVER buy a dog from a pet store - they usually get their stock from puppy mills that turn out far too many litters a year to make some money.

Great photo! I'm a dog lover, so I may be biased in saying that they make great companions and pets. As you noted, there is a great deal of responsibility involved also - it's almost like having a child. That being said, they will repay the time and effort you give them many times over.

I think you should get a Golden Retriever--they are wonderful pets and easily trained. He/she could also retrieve all your things for you.
