November 22: In Never Rains in Southern California Redux -- It Only Snows

Last month I gleefully captured a rare major rainstorm from the “safety” of inside my garage.
Today, to the surprise of most of our SoCal weather forecasters, it snowed extensively. I hasten to say this did NOT happen in San Diego, rather at higher elevations.
These live shots from KTLA (Channel 5 in Los Angeles) were taken on Interstate 15 Northeast of LA on the Cajon Summit which is above 4000 feet.

To be fair, it is about 65 miles from LA to Cajon. And in that 65 miles, yes you to get to a nice elevation, 4000 feet. The difference in tempature in the summer time is as much as 30 degrees for the same area. It will be 80 degrees in LA and 110 in Cajon.

I think the snow is taking over the universe. It has definitely become bolder and more assertive in the last few years. More than anything though, I am in awe of your ability to get halfway decent shots off of a television screen.

Hooda thunkit is right!!! I'm sitting here in New England and we have just had hints of snow so far. Oh well soon it will be the norm.

Robin..! I was in SoCal on Monday as I was flying back there was snow still on the ground in Barstow Monday afternoon! Crazy... We had almost two inches of rain here in Las Vegas from the same storm..!

Guest 23-Nov-2004 02:48
This looks like Cincinnati in the middle of January! I didn't even think California ever saw snow. Amazing!

Great image! Seems a little unusual to think of snow in your area.

Holy smokes!

We are forcasted to have snow on Thanksgiving, makes for good hunting for the hunters, easier to track. I am not looking forward to the white stuff, but living where I do, just south of Buffalo, in ski country, I guess it is inevitable.

impressive images...I ´have never see nothing like this alive...

Pepe Zyman22-Nov-2004 18:36

The storm that rolled through Saturday night did a lot of damage here in Irvine. We had two huge trees derooted and fall across the road. The winds had out hanging potted plants swaying sideways. As a result we also have snow in the hills and canyons less than 15 minutes away.
Guest 22-Nov-2004 18:09
Wow - reminds me of South Dakota! Wasn't that storm yesterday just insane? I've never heard thunder here before. Crazy!
Guest 22-Nov-2004 18:02
Are you KIDDING?
Kenneth Zimmerman22-Nov-2004 17:59
I know it's coming to us soon, but here in Michigan we just slow down and drive more carefull.
There are a few accidents when it gets real bad but for the most part we just put up with winter until we can get the boats and all the toys out again when spring comes around.

Those foreczsters get it wrong all too often. Fun idea for a PaD, Robin. Brrrr!
Guest 22-Nov-2004 17:39
Yea, I KNEW this wasn't in SoCal! LOL!! C'mon what is snow!!
Leo Charette22-Nov-2004 17:14
Looks like you SoCal folks really know how to drive in the stuff. A lot like we Virginia folks ;) Look like a fair amount of snow... huge for SoCal.
