August 8: 30 Years of Memories

San Diego, CA

Well folks, exactly 30 years ago I arrived in San Diego, and upon seeing it for the first time, I never dreamed that I would spend a huge chunk [38.7%] of my adult life here.

Here I am toasting the younger man who in those days wore a beard, beads, bracelets, bermuda shorts and Birkenstocks! I actually showed up in town late on the 7th, but I really connect to the 8th because Richard M. Nixon resigned from the Presidency on that date!

I came here to work as a consultant/manager for University Associates, an internationally renowned human relations publishing, consulting, and training firm. John E. Jones and Tony Reilly
were my two major colleagues. Thus my career as an organizational consultant was born. Since that fateful date I have enjoyed consulting to hundreds of clients hopefully touching people’s lives in a constructive and growth producing manner.

Romance you ask? Why yes. **Susie** who lovingly helped me to settle here and to appreciate the beauties of this area, especially the sea critters and flowers, and then of course Ellen the love of my life, who I married in 1979. In 1987 she “got on the bus Gus, went out the back Jack.”
And then **Lynn** who remains a close friend.

I have tears as I reflect on those 8,408 days. Much joy and growth and wonderful friendships. Its been pretty damned good! I think I’ll stay another 30 years!

You look as if you were a bit of a lady killer. You really suited the beard!
Guest 10-Aug-2008 06:59

You should bring back the beard and sideburns.
Never too late except when they stop growing.

It's never too late for beard, beads, bracelets, bermuda shorts and Birkenstocks Robin.

.....what a day that was. The first and only president to resign. I watched TV with my Dad as "Tricky Dicky" called it quits. Thirty years you say.....I would be interesting to see some shots of the different cameras you have been using over the last thirty years.

JUST thirty years more??? I think you're under-shooting here, Robin . . .

Dude!

Nixon's resignation. There was a theme I missed! I've been in DC for a third of the time you've been in San Diego. I can't believe it's been that long.

Great photo, Robin .. and wonderful sentiments. Sounds like your life has been very rich and full, and yes - may the next 30+ years be equally so!

Just to hear Russ say "oy vey" was a gift unto itself. Robin, this is a warm and touching memorial to your life in progress for sure. You are always so open about yourself and your musings which is just so wonderful. The photo you have concocted here well illustrates your poignant words. Very nicely done.

Good luck on 30 more years.

Well, Robin, what can I say? This is wonderful! I too passed my thirtieth anniversary in San Diego this year; I arrived a poor, married graduate student on June 1st, 1974. Who could have predicted all that would pass -- and how our paths would cross many times? Congratulations, my friend, on many many good things over the years, and on the beauty of the journey, the pain and the laughter, which made you who you are today.

Great stuff! I hope you see another 30 too!
Guest 08-Aug-2004 23:01
Cheers, Robs! Put those Birkies back on. I still have mine--they mold to the foot like no other shoe. Carpe diem, buddy!

Cheer's Robin to you and your home. Heart string tugging at reading the posting.

It's a pitty that a body can't stay as young as a brain. You where a good looking man in your youth, Robin and still today you do not look "old". I remember myself when I was 40 and we had a school meeting, some of my shoolmaids whre looking like old worn man. There is no reason to live like a nerd, with a little bit of moderation, knowhow and training, one can stay young for a long period of life. I wish you to make this 30 more without any problems.

You always have so much heart in your postings. This is really cool, to see you as you arrived in San Diego too! And Robin, you are NEVER too old, or too cool for beads OR Brikenstocks!! Now go get them and I expect to see them feature in a photo this week! LOL!
jypsee08-Aug-2004 17:15
Well, birkenstocks and bermuda shorts, huh?? oh, and a beard as well....no wonder the girls loved you!!! fabulous bio, Robin...
jude08-Aug-2004 16:43
Excellently done Robin.. I loved your commentary very much. I have a friend who is San Diego in his heart. He's not sure he'll ever go back, but he says it will be his "home" forever.
katwilkens08-Aug-2004 16:33
Very cool photo combo. I had a similar idea but haven't worked up the courage to do it yet...maybe on my birthday. I enjoyed reading your caption.
Karen Leaf08-Aug-2004 16:11
(clicking my glass to yours) Hope the next 30 are as rewarding, and that you will have the wonderful sense of humor, and kindess that you today! Maybe the Sox will win the big one sometime within the next 30 years!

(thanks for the reminder about the day--have lost track of the calendar date!)
