July 2 - Work and Play In LA
Pamona, CA
Imagine yourself sitting outside on temperate summer night. The air is still and there is a full moon dressed in rose and orange rising in the East directly behind you. Looking to the West you see that you are surrounded by about 15,000 people sitting patiently in a huge natural bowl that has such perfect acoustics that you can hear whispers from across the way.
The opening act has departed and the crowd’s murmur rises and falls . . . and then a spot light sweeps across the world-famous and newly remodeled Hollywood Bowl and a joyous hush settles across the amphitheatre.
Two not so young singers take the stage, arm-in-arm like the old friends they truly are since they met in grade school 50 years ago. They begin strumming their guitars and next their sweet voices sound out: “Hello darkness, my old friend, I’ve come to talk to you again….”
It is now the next day and my heart strings and nostalgic tears still resonate from each every song they sang in that incredible moonlit setting. I knew every song, every word, every nuance. They have grown and changed, and they are great and wonderful.
Today, aching from all the standing, bus riding, hill climbing, hard-seat sitting, hand clapping and cheering, I turned my attentions to getting ready for our work tomorrow. Michele and I spent the day in my room debating, designing, teasing, and laughing and reminiscing. We are ready for tomorrow!
And to celebrate, with the echoes and feeling of Simon and Garfunkle in our hearts, we went to Edward’s Cinemas to see Fahrenheit 9/11. Powerful, moving and insightful. What a weekend so far!
