June 29: Quail Gardens

Encinitas, CA

Today I went on a hunt for the “smoky” waterfall. If I learned nothing else, I found that trying to get a steady shot at 1/6th of second is virtually impossible even with my camera braced on a fence post.

So I took this one at 1/125th and it worked, but the waterfall doesn’t have the effect I want. Next time I’ll take a monopod or tripod.

At the least I like the cool green colors and the feeling of peace.

WOW! What a beautiful place! This is a lovely shot, Robin! Will you share the tirpod version when you do it?

This looks like a postcard! I know what you mean though, about the slower shutter, it may have a nice effect! Live and learn!!

A beautiful scene Robin, I like it as is also.

Looks like a beautiful place, Robin! I like this pic as is, but I guess you wanted to show more motion in the water? I think Tine had a good idea about the self timer. Anyway, nice composition!

So much in the image-statuary (?) on the very top, some kind of palm at the head of the ravine, and lovely framing around the falls. imho, those milky water pics are great, but are certainly not for every falls shot. I think this one has too much other great stuff, and the 'effect' would detract from the other elements. (Just my opinion....)

Robin, this is gorgeous!! I wouldn't change anything about this shot -- even at 1/125, the water still shows motion.

I agree with Kate. This looks the way a waterfall should look. I love the greenery.

Nice picture.I like the greenery around the waterfall.

Nice Robin. I like the water effect. This is VERY personal, but I don't understand why some think it is important to get the falling water to look like watered silk. That's really not the way we see it. Yours looks very natural.

Excellent picture anyway,
have you tried bracing the camera against something solid and using the self-timer?
This eliminates the camera shake caused by pressing the button,
it has helped me many times when I find myself without a tripod.
