Happy Halloween - A Oxymoron

I don’t think of myself as a curmudgeon (although those of you who know me are permitted to comment on that point if you like!).

This a little rant about Halloween; I am NOT a big fan. I don’t quite get it why we celebrate horror and extortion (trick or treat), or why an emphasis on spiritual beings is anchored in ghostly and macabre images.

I know the kids have fun, and if I were a parent perhaps I’d feel differently. But until someone can explain to me why all this uproar about fear and terror is good, I’m sticking to my view on it!

I agree...I don't celebrate it. Just seems a little like the ocult to me but it has become quite commericalized and that is why they make it look like fun for the kids but some creepy things happen that night and I just don't partake. A way to make more money is what it comes down too. Creepy and things that are like demons and such just don't belong in our kids' hands but so many have accepted it. Dang, look at all the horror flicks out there.

When I was a kid, the night before Halloween was known
as "Mischief Night". Kids went out and blew off a little steam
by soaping up windows and playing pranks.

The next night we were back to being little costumed angels!

It has crept into our culture here...something not celebrated until a few years ago. We teach our children not to take sweets from strangers nor talk to them, yet tonight....ho hum !!

Robin, our generations celebrated Halloween with scarecrows, haystacks and pumpkins and maybe a witch or a ghost or two. The whole country is costuming like we do for Mardi Gras here in Louisiana. I don't exactly get where this craze started but on Bourbon Street tonight and tomorrow night there are more people costumed than on Mardi Gras---and it is WILD>
