Ryan, it was very likely this species as it is the commonest one of this type in that area.

I recently was on a tour of the old city of Cartahenia & saw a downy sized woodpecker with a back similar to this & red on the head on a city tree. Could it be the red-crowned? If not do you have another suggestion?
