COMMON/WHITE CHECKERED-SKIPPER Butterfly

Common and White Checkered-Skipper (Pyrgus communis and albescens)

New information in the past 20 years indicates that of the sub-family Skippers (Hesperiidae) the genus of the once abundant
Common Checkered-Skipper has been determined to be of two seperate species, with the White Checkered-Skipper rapidly
displacing the former in the deep south, such as Florida. Displacement is moving northward up the US east coast states.
Appearances of both species being virtually identical, only dissection can distinguish between the two, so they are treated
as one for field identification. The butterfly in these photos is most likely to be the Common Checkered-Skipper.

The Butterfly shown was captured 40 minutes after the oviposit was observed, so may not be that particular individual.
Egg diameter, 0.022 to 0.030 inches, (0.558 to 0.762 mm). Three could fit on head of a common pin 0.066 inches (1.67mm).

Location: North Carolina (north central Randolph County).
Note: Being no expert I'm only 95% certain this is a female. Also, the butterfly was released unharmed back to nature.
