Eunhaesa, Daegu

Eunhaesa temple is situated in East Daegu, South Korea. Founded in 809 by Hyechol Kuksa, the National Preceptor of Shilla, the temple flourished for many centuries under the name "Haeansa" (tranquil ocean temple). After the devastation of the Imjin war in 1592-98, the temple was transferred here and renamed Eunhaesa. In 1919 it was designated a "great head temple" and now serves as the headquarters of the 10th district of Jogye Buddhism (the dominant Buddhism of Korea). There are about eight smaller hermitages are attached to the temple, situated about 2-3 kms away from the temple on the mountains.
