March 3, 2006

While at anchor, I have to bring water to the boat by jerry can.
Shibumi carries 400 gallons of water.
I estimate Jill and I use about 10 gallons a day.
So I haul about that much a day from shore.
Water weighs about 8 pounds per gallon, so that is 80 pounds of water a day.
Water costs five cents per gallon here in Boot Key Harbor.

I drink a lot of water.
I wanted to make a comment here. On my hikes longer than a day I carry a gallon of water with me.
Even if I know the terrain and have my pump and filter with me. The rule of thumb is to carry no more
than 25 percent of your weight. At 8-10 lbs that is considerable especially when carrying a sleeping
bag, tent, extra pair of shoes, food etc. Some may laugh, but I have hiked 10 hours on the Appalachian
Trail without seeing another soul and have been met with dry creek beds and foul cisterns.
Glad you don't wait until your supply is low.

Nice shot. That's quite a workout moving all that water.

Schooldays, a pint of water weighs a pound and a quarter.
Therefor one gallon equals ten pounds. Sorry about that.

Just think of the exercise benefit! Maybe you could consider buying instant water, available in powder form. All you have to do is add water. Wait...that doesn't sound right. Carry on, mate!
