| I mentioned in previous journal postings that I contracted an engineer to underpinned the southwest corner of my house in three places. Jack was the engineer and his assistant was Ken. Jack fabricated several lengths of galvanized steel pipe "pin piles". Each pipe was driven into the earth until what Jack called refusal. Refusal is the point at which the pile lodged in solid earth and could be driven no further. Then steel support brackets were welded to the top of each pin pile and the corner of the building was jacked-up, with me testing the smooth operation of the windows and doors as Jack and Ken lifted the structure. Filling the piles with concrete reinforced with a steel bar was the final step before refilling the holes and restoring the landscape. I then grouted what remained of the crack between the wall block and painted the wall. After nearly three months of research and only two and a half days of work we were back on solid ground. |
